The
Northeast Medical Association (NEMA) is a society of physicians
and dentists that since 1957, has met yearly to discuss recent advances
in science, medicine and public health. Much of NEMA's interest
is focused on injuries, safety, and equipment as they relate to
skiing and other outdoor recreation.
The
Program:
Each winter, NEMA alternates conducting
a 3-day meeting at ski resort in the East with a weeklong meeting
at a ski resort in the West or in Europe. Papers are presented
by recognized experts and by NEMA members, applicants and guests.
Topics include virtually every aspect of medicine and outdoor
recreation.

The
Membership:
This eclectic organization includes physicians
and dentists of all ages, all specialties and all practice settings,
from primary care doctors practicing in small communities of New
Hampshire to specialists chairing departments at major medical centers
in Boston. The common thread running through the membership is a
love of skiing and the outdoors. Many members serve as ski area
physicians, ski patrollers, ski instructors and disabled skier trainers.
Some members are former Olympic and professional ski racers and
mountain climbers.
The
Camaraderie:
Meetings include an active social calendar
that offers ample time to ski with family and friends. Spouses and
children attend all social functions and are welcomed at the scientific
sessions. Indeed, this venerable and enduring organization includes
physicians that are second generation NEMA members.
