Dear
Fellow NEMA Members:
All of us in attendance at our 51st Annual Meeting
in Steamboat Springs, Colorado agreed that NEMA meetings must
be more accessible to a changing, younger membership. With your
permission, here’s what we’d like to do:
- Return
to our Northeastern roots by holding all meetings in New England.
- Limit
scientific programs to three days. What we call a “meeting”
may last a few days longer, but only to encourage resorts
to extend discounts to those people who’d like to make a week
of it.
- Meet
during school vacations. We know that not all schools in all
states enjoy the same week of vacations. We will rotate our
meetings so that over time, we should hit them all.
- Reduce
the cost of meetings. Eliminating Western and European meetings
will remove the lion’s share of costs. We will also reduce
the number of group dinners and cocktail parties. Our experience
at Steamboat demonstrated that cash bars and impromptu optional
group dinners allows us to preserve our social tradition at
a fraction of the cost.
- Cater
to children. We would like to divert funds normally used for
honoraria to organize chaperoned ski programs for the kids,
babysitting, and other children’s events.
- Coordinate
NEMA meetings with those of other specialties. As best we
can, we will try to avoid scheduling NEMA meetings during
other major national medical meetings.
We hope
these changes will make it easier for you to attend NEMA meetings,
and will encourage you to invite your friends. If you have ideas
as to how we might improve our meetings, please send them along.
I look forward
to seeing you all at the 52nd Annual Meeting at Stoweflake Resort
& Spa March 1st-4th 2009.
Very best
regards,
David Novis, MD,
President
